Lower Limb Prosthestics

Limb Prosthetics

Thank you for your interest in Limb Prosthetics from JP&O Prosthetic & Orthotic Laboratory. At JP&O Lab, each prosthesis is custom designed and hand made based on the unique individual needs of our patients.

Prosthetics are artificial replacement for a missing limb or part of a limb. A prosthesis is not as natural as your own limb, but can help you regain independence, if you are willing to focus your thoughts and energies into learning how to use it. The keys to success are working with your physician, prosthetist and therapist – the team – on the process of design, fitting, and gait training, which are required for a successful positive outcome.

Patients reap the benefits of JP&O staying on the cusp of new prosthetic developments. Our prosthetists then add the newest technologies and techniques to their wealth of prosthetic knowledge to assure amputees receive the most appropriate prosthesis for the individual’s goals and lifestyle. You can receive the most advanced technologies right here at JP&O. The best technologies that are available to the mass market are used in our facilities.

JP&O Technologies offered in Lower Limb Prosthetics:

Otto Bock Harmony Vacuum SystemOttobock Microprocessor Knee

Otto Bock’s C-Leg and Compact are microprocessor-controlled knees designed to deliver the best in stability and reliability. Both knees utilize easy-to-charge lithium ion batteries with 40-45 hours of power. They are most appropriate for above the knee amputees who currently walk or have the potential to walk throughout the community at a moderate or broad range of walking speeds. A high level of stance stability is provided, ideal for those who encounter uneven terrain, descend stairs or negotiate slopes. The C-Leg can utilize a second mode for varied activities such as bicycling, roller-blading, or prolonged standing. JP&O’s prosthetists are extensively trained and experienced in providing the C-Leg and Compact systems from Otto Bock. Ossur’s Rheo Knee System is offered by JP&O and is similar in style and function to Otto Bock’s C-Leg. The Rheo Knee was the first microprocessor swing and stance knee system to utilize the power of artificial intelligence. The system is capable of independent thought as it learns how the user walks, recognizing and responding immediately to changes in speed, load, and terrain. The knee adapts to any situation enabling the individual to quickly regain confidence in his or her ability to walk where and how they choose. The Rheo Knee is appropriate for an above knee amputee that has the potential to be an unlimited community ambulator. The main features of the Rheo Knee System are that it has continual adaptation, natural & efficient motion, and is simple and convenient. JP&O Lab is a certified Rheo Knee provider. The Harmony Vacuum System is offered by JP&O Labs in conjunction with leading prosthetic manufacturer Otto Bock Healthcare. It is most appropriate for amputees that have the ability to remain active. Vacuum technology assists the user in maintaining volume throughout the day. Daily volume fluctuations typically cause an inconsistent fit for many amputees not under vacuum and can lead to pressure points on the limb. Vacuum provides enhanced linkage (the prosthesis being one with the user). Vacuum Technology reduces shear forces on the limb. The results of these technologies are that the patient will get a consistent fit throughout the day. Patients will see improved limb health. Most importantly though patients should see enhanced comfort. This system often leads to increased balance, stability, and control over the patient’s prosthesis. JP&O Technologies offered in Upper Limb Prosthetics:

Otto Bock Healthcare’s Myobock Systems are also offered by JP&O Labs for those patients that have suffered from upper limb amputations. Otto Bock’s Myobock system represents the most advanced upper limb prosthetic components in the world. Generally, these components use signals from your muscles to control the hand and wrist, allowing very precise and natural control of the prosthesis. These may be designed to have a natural (hand-like) appearance while providing significant function, or to be a maximally functional tool for work or other activities. These powered components may also be controlled by more conventional means if no muscle signal is available, or the user is accustomed to using a harness. For above the elbow prosthetic fittings and application we may use a combination of body-powered and myoelectric components or a full powered system using Otto Bock’s Dynamic Arm. For more information on myoelectrics or myobock systems offered by Otto Bock and offered by JP&O visit

Otto Bock’s Dynamic Arm System offered by JP&O for above the elbow amputees raises elbow function to the next level. This system utilizes Myobock technology mentioned above. Otto Bock provides the largest selection of electrically powered elbows and hands. They utilize a controller or an electronic brain that receives input from the patient’s remaining muscle tissues, processes it, and activates the motors in the elbow providing function and movement. The Dynamic Arm actively lifts loads weighing up to 13 pounds and will hold steady up to 50 pounds. It also offers integrated Automatic Forearm Balance (AFB). AFB stores energy when the arm is extended and reuses it for flexion. This translates to a smooth, natural swing while walking. The Dynamic Arm is compatible with Bluetooth technology, which allows it to be programmed without using cords or cables. It comes equipped with a Lithium Ion battery, which delivers reliable high performance. These cutting edge technologies are brought to you right here at JP&O Labs with our Myobock Certified practitioners. Otto Bock’s Myoelectric Hand Systems are another series of technologies offered by JP&O Labs. Myoelectric hand prostheses are an alternative to conventional hook prostheses and have a stronger pinch force, better grip, and are more flexible and easier to use. Myoelectric control is used to operate electric motor-driven hands & wrists. As with all Myobock technology, surface electrodes embedded in the prosthetic socket make contact with the skin and detect and amplify muscle action potentials from voluntarily contracting muscle in the residual limb. The electrical signal turns on an electric motor to provide a function such as wrist rotation and hand motions such as grasping and holding items.
